Drinking Water Standards and Their Implementation—A Critical Assessment

چکیده
Diminishing clean water resources and their pollution (due to human activities climatic change) are of great concern on a global basis. Under such conditions, the adequacy drinking (DW) standards meticulous implementation issues utmost importance in safeguarding health. Unfortunately, significant number disease outbreaks (and other suspected/potential health effects) related DW, even developed countries, attests fact that these require vigilance continuous re-appraisal, particularly considering assorted emerging contaminants ever-improving technological tools cope with them. Therefore, present comprehensive assessment addresses main concerns regarding DW thereof. Emphasis is placed identifying inherent deficiencies neglect potential toxic debatable specifications/limit values) regulations for monitoring quality weaknesses available analytical/measurement techniques inadequacies protocols). Rather serious aspects evident categories contaminants, i.e., synthetic chemicals biological species. In regard addressing issues, progress made recent years at scientific/technical level challenges outlined toward goal an improvement implementation.

Drinking water standards in South American countries: convergences and divergences.
In this paper we present a comparative assessment of drinking-water standards from almost all South American countries, using the USA and the Canadian standards and the World Health Organization (WHO) Guidelines as references. Similarities and discrepancies between standards/guidelines were identified through descriptive analyses and, in the case of chemical standards, clustering techniques. In...
متن کاملIntroduction to Drinking Water Risk Assessment
The need for a clean and safe drinking water supply for centers of population has been recognized for over 2000 years. The early Romans recognized that human activities and effluent were a major source of water pollution, and that providing water from relatively unpopulated areas was a solution to the problem. In 312 b.c. the Romans under Appius Claudius began development of an aqueduct system ...
متن کاملLifetime risk assessment of Radium-226 in drinking water samples
Background: One of the most significant radionuclides in natural drinking waters is 226Ra and its decay products. It is potential of health problems, including cancer risk. In this study, the effect of 226Ra concentration in 28 drinking water samples collected from the North Guilan province was investigated. Materials and Methods: The activity concentrations of 226Ra were measured by using of r...
متن کاملAssessment of Drinking Water Quality from Bottled Water Coolers
BACKGROUND Drinking water quality can be deteriorated by microbial and toxic chemicals during transport, storage and handling before using by the consumer. This study was conducted to evaluate the microbial and physicochemical quality of drinking water from bottled water coolers. METHODS A total of 64 water samples, over a 5-month period in 2012-2013, were collected from free standing bottled...
